Learned early on, working
with the client, produces far greater results than working for them. To this end, most of our work is done on a time and material basis with weekly settlements. "Bid jobs" usually include a degree of padding meant to cover those inevitable unforeseen situations. There often would be a trail of paperwork and a bit of skepticism to deal with as well. Working hand in hand, customer and contractor have 100% communication and understanding of all aspects of the job.
